SUPERHERO COMIC

LEEMING SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL - ENGLISH

As you all know, every Tuesday we attend Leeming Senior High School for an extension Mathematics and English program. Last term in English, we watched “Alice in Wonderland” and looked at how to ask philosophical questions, or as our English teacher Mrs Longmire put it, “BIG, FAT, WICKED QUESTIONS!!!” This term, we are looking at superheroes! Yes, superheroes! We thought about questions, such as “What makes a superhero super?” and “What motivates a superhero to do what they do?” before receiving a booklet about how to create our own superhero and superhero comic. 

We had to think about questions such as “What are your superhero’s powers?” and “What is your superhero’s backstory?” We had design our superhero’s looks and plan out their adventures and troubles until finally, we were given a blank book to draw and create our comic in. This book will contain all of our imaginative ideas as we become “mini comic authors”!

“My superhero doesn’t have a name yet, but she was inspired by Batman. She is a solitary creature of the night who protects the foreign planet she calls home and all who take residence within it. At one point, she actually is possessed by the devil, however, she escapes his grasps and takes her place once again as the protector of the people.” - Rhian

Some of us will write about evil geniuses. Other will write about very happy endings. But we can guarantee that they will all be magnificent reads.

SENIOR CHOIR

In Week 3 of Term 3, on the 7^th of August 2014, the Senior Choir (led by Mrs Mullan) journeyed to the Peter Alderton Centre to give an inspiring performance to the elderly people that spend their time there. We have been experimenting with a LOT of different styles of music and practised an infinite number of techniques to ensure our singing remains perfect, and were thrilled at being able to stage our first performance of the year at the venue. After opening our performance with the Mexican tune ‘Oye,’ the choir members from Room 22 were given an extremely special part in the performance- several of us were chosen to do the instruments behind the song ‘Beautiful Noise,’ creating a serene and melodious backing to a wonderful song popularised by the famous performer Neil Diamond. After that was finished, we had a few performances from Wattle Groove’s Got Talent

(our school talent show)- a group of three girls from Room 20, a hip hop dance, and a little bit later, Shyanne from Room 10 singing a solo called ‘Little Me,’ by the pop group Little Mix. After we had finished our amazing performance, the elderly decided to sing a song for us- a number by Doris Day called ‘Que Sera Sera,’ accompanied by a soloist. Their performance was truly inspiring and it was awesome to see them getting in on the act- you are NEVER too old to sing!

BOOK WEEK

Monday, 25 August is our Book Week Dress Up Parade.  This year, each classroom has had to select a book and this will be the students’ theme for dressing up.  Room 22 has chosen The Avengers (a Marvel Comic) which ties in beautifully to our studies at Leeming Senior High School. We all love a superhero after all! Start thinking about costumes now! Perhaps you may even come as the very superhero you are creating? It should be interesting to see what you all come as. Room 22 – Avengers Assemble!

SPEAK UP

As a finalist in the Speak Up awards in our class, I was invited to speak along with Amos, Mikayla & Bianca in front of the year 5s, 6s, and 7s at the school trials for the Annual Speak up Award. It was a difficult thing to do and I was extremely nervous, but I managed to excel and get myself picked for the Interschool trials that were to be held in Week 2. There would be 12 speakers, all from different schools, and three would be chosen to advance to the next round. There were four from our school ready to face this gruelling task, including two from our Room- Aliyah, Amos, Nazdana, & I.

The trial was held on the 30^th of August at the South Perth Masonic Hall. We all spoke as fluently and eloquently as we could, emphasising our main points and using gestures to make our point. In fact, when the names of the people advancing to the next round were called, we found out that Aliyah was invited to the next round! Overall, being in the Speak Up final was a rewarding and breathtaking experience that I will never forget.

STEP-A-THON

You might have heard about it before, or perhaps you don’t even know what it is! That was me a couple of days ago. One morning, Mr Petch told our class about the ‘Step-a-thon’, an event raising funds for the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. The aim is to gather sponsors before the event. Next, you count your steps for the whole week (1-7 September) and then your sponsors are able to donate money towards the cause. Plus, you would have fun every day!

The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute is an organisation focused on combating emerging children’s health issues, such as diabetes, obesity and food allergies, as well as finding answers to unsolved problems, such as cancer and genetic conditions. Their vision is to be a main contributor to the fountain of knowledge that will help improve many children’s lives.

The first 25 000 children that register for the Step-a-thon will receive a free pedometer that will help in counting your steps. I have registered for the event and am very excited! Did you know the average child takes 10 000 steps per day? What would happen if every child registered was sponsored $5 for every 10 000 steps? A miracle, that’s what!

SLEEK GEEKS

 The time of the year has finally arrived! The annual ‘Sleek Geeks’ science competition is here. The students of Room 22 have once again entered this nationwide competition with the hope they will capture the Eureka prize. Our class also participated in this competition in 2013. Yet this year, however, we are confident in the entries we have put forward. All that is left for now is the  l - o - n - g  wait for the results!
