BE INSPIRED - PART III

Students here at Room 22 have been working extremely hard on our first project for the year, the ‘Be Inspired’ project. The contents of this project consisted of three parts. In Part I we had to write a booklet on an inspirational person of our choice. Part II required us to deliver a presentation to the class on our inspirational person. Now what you’ve all been waiting for Part III of the project was all about getting CREATIVE! In this part we could use our inspiration to create whatever we wanted. Absolutely everybody made a fantastic creation ranging from video games to movies from murder scenes to posters. We have managed to gather a few exceptional examples of the unbelievable work produced for this project which you can all check out below.
Kai’s game – Inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto

Deckard’s movie – Inspired by Markus Notch

Henry’s movie – Inspired by his family

Amos’ movie – Inspired by his Uncle

Lachlan’s movie – Inspired by his Dad, Brent

Elycias’s movie – Inspired by her sister, Monique

Adam’s movie and pivot animation – Inspired by Ryan Doyle

ART
During Art this term, our class has worked on a large variety of things. We began with illusion-like artwork that involved writing our name (or just the first name) in an outside arc across an A3 piece of white paper, & joining the edges of letters to the page middle with a beam. The desired effect was to make the letters appear to ‘shoot out’ across the page. Done well, it is rather quite stunning.

Next, we proceeded to drawing wiggly pictures of musical instruments. They were meant to look inaccurate; meant to seem like they were dancing. We then paired complimentary colours together into patterns, & decorated the instruments with them: a patch of yellow & purple on one part of the instrument, a patch of blue and orange somewhere else, complimented by a background of red & green behind the instrument. More time consuming, at least by my point of view, than the last task, but at the same a pleasure to view.

For the coming ANZAC Day, we made poppy badges from pieces of coloured card glued together. By far the simplest of the three, & rather quite fun to do.

Miss Randall, the new Art teacher, is a nice person with a keen sense of humour. What she has in store for Room 22 and the rest of the school in the following weeks, is anyone’s guess.

PIVOT
This term, many of our students have been using an animation program called Pivot. It all started when Adam decided to use Pivot in his ‘Be Inspired - Part III’ project. Now, about half of the class uses this simple, yet effective program. Some of the children have made some wonderful animations, whether it be about Parkour, the Greenhouse Effect, or, even Mr Petch. The main Pivot users are Intisar, Peng, Sean, and Adam, although many others use Pivot too.
Here is the link to download Pivot: http://pivotanimator.net/Download
There are many other stickman animators on the internet, but Pivot is by far the best. Here are some links to websites where you can download things to put into Pivot (vehicles, backgrounds, different stickmen, etc.) Let’s get Pivot-ing!

ANZAC DAY
On the 11th of April, our school is commemorating ANZAC Day with an ANZAC ceremony. As you may already know, ANZAC Day observes the soldiers who have fought in wars, especially World War I. ANZAC Day is on the 25th of April, the date the Battle of Gallipoli commenced.

The Battle of Gallipoli (or Gallipoli Campaign) was an attempt by the Allies of World War I to control the sea route from Europe to Russia. The Allies included Britain and France, as well as Australian and New Zealand forces – the ANZACs (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps). The plan failed due to lack of knowledge of the terrain and a fierce Turkish resistance.

Many ceremonies, parades and other activities are held on ANZAC Day to remember the lives of those who participated or died in military action, particularly on the Gallipoli Peninsula in World War I. The Dawn Service or church prayers are a particularly important aspect of ANZAC Day. ANZAC Day is also a public holiday and day of remembrance in New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa and Tonga. It is also commemorated with special services and events on or around April 25 in a range of countries across the globe. These include: the United Kingdom, France, Turkey, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Canada and the United States (including Hawaii).

LIGHTWORKS
Lightworks is a professional video editor, and has been around since 1989. Lightworks has edited thousands of Hollywood movies in the past, and is still proudly offering a free license for everyone. The program offers a wide range of unique features from other video editors. Lightworks is currently available for Linux and Windows. Compatibility for Mac OS X will be coming soon.

Students in Room 22 are using Lightworks for their Sleek Geeks. Lightworks will help the students to create their short three minute video that is required in the Sleek Geeks. All we can do now is to wish our students the best of luck, and videos will arrive shortly. You can download the free license on the Lightworks website.

 WACKADOO ZOO
Over the past few weeks Mrs Mullan has organised and planned the year two’s and three’s to star in the Wackadoo Zoo. The students have put in plenty of time learning their words and creating their wonderful masks. In the zoo there are five animals: pigs that say neigh, monkeys that bray, lions that crow, goats that bark and a cow that says meow. All these animals were happy until a professor comes along and tries to teach the animals to make the right sound. He commits himself to teach them and as he goes round to every cage he gets more and more annoyed until finally when the cows continually make the wrong sound, he had enough and he leaves. The play is filled with songs and special thanks should go to Mrs Mullan (our Music teacher) who organised the whole performance, the classroom teachers who helped get everyone ready in time, Ms. Randall (our Visual Art teacher) who organised the masks and of course the students who performed; they were real stars! I had a wonderful time being the Professor. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to work with younger children. I even have a new nickname around the school grounds these days… You’ll never guess what it is!
They call me, Professor!

SUMMER INTERSCHOOL CARNIVAL
On the 28th of March, the Friday of week eight, five teams of energetic young students of Wattle Grove drove off in a bus to Maida Vale Primary School to compete in the Summer Interschool Carnival. The teams consisted of, two cricket, two softball, and a volleyball team. Put together by Mr Sherlock, the teams prepared to compete against teams like Maida Vale, Edney, Woodlupine, Forrestfield, High Wycombe, and Dawson Park. Our cricket team smashed a new record of one hundred and thirty nine runs. That’s amazing! For the second year in a row, Wattle Grove obtained the cricket trophy! And there will be an engraving of our schools name on it TWICE.  Congratulations to all students who participated in the events and represented our school. It was absolutely fantastic to be part of a school team that showed such tremendous sportsmanship to themselves and all of the other teams.

SLEEK GEEKS

It has come again: the tremendously dramatic time of year where the scientific part of our epic minds come to life! The Sleek Geeks Science Competition arises once more! The time when school students form teams of formidable power and go head to head against each other in a battle for fame and fortune. The victorious team will be presented the ultimate prize – a whopping two thousand dollars and an incredible trip to Sydney.

This breath-taking competition is held Australia-wide, and it finishes by the end of the first term.  It is a ferocious contest that will test the limits of its contestants, and they will fight relentlessly for final victory – only the truly devoted will go to the extreme to achieve success, because they are in pursuit for excellence, fame, fortune…and much, much, more.

The teams, consisting of no more than four people, are required to dig down, deep into the depths of knowledge and research a scientific concept or theory and, somehow, explain it in an understandable way in the form of a video lasting no more than three action-packed minutes. It will consume the energy of the contestants. It will sap the very strength straight from their mind and body like a toxin of some sort running in the blood.

The contest will be tense. It shall be interesting. The contestants are preparing for the great battle ahead. Adventure awaits and as with all adventures, there is cost. But the most important thing that matters is that the contestants, no matter what they do, they have fun along the journey and enjoy the process. The great clash of scientific minds will come by before we know it. The competition starts now...

AMAZING ART

It is the beginning of a new year and we have a new art teacher! Miss Randall, previously from Byford Primary School, has come to teach us at Wattle Grove. To add the icing on top of the cake, we have a new art award! At the last senior assembly, Room 22 (That’s us, just in case you’ve forgotten) won the Senior Art Award! We have a brand new certificate and trophy!

We achieved this magnificent award for our “excellent listening skills and producing some amazing ‘shooting star letter name’ artwork.” We interviewed Miss Randall to find out what she thinks about moving to W.G.P.S.

S&L: How long have you been teaching for?
Miss R: I have been teaching for 12 years.
S&L: That’s as long as we’ve been alive!
Miss R: Hehe
S&L: Why do you love Art?
Miss R: I love Art because there are so many different things you can do to express yourself.
S&L: Do you love any other subjects?
Miss R: I like Science, English, Music, all subjects really! But of course, my favourite is Art.
S&L: What do you think of Wattle Grove?
Miss R: I love teaching here. The students are gorgeous and friendly and the grounds are beautiful.

We think this year is going to be a great year in Art!

AUSTRALIA DAY DRESS UP
The Australia Day dress-up was held on the 14th of February, back in Week 2. Students got to dress up in their Aussie gear at the cost of a single gold coin donation. Altogether, Wattle Grove Primary raised over $700! All money raised went to the Mundaring Bushfire Appeal to aid with the recent bush fires. It was fantastic to see so many students dressed up in their wonderful Aussie gear. Thank you to everyone who participated, your generous donations helped make this day an utter success.

MERIT CERTIFICATES

We would like to congratulate last years merit award winners as they weren’t at school the day their award was presented. Intisar and Lucy finally received recognition for their fabulous achievement in the class.
Three other fortunate merit certificate award winners received their very own award. These were none other than Henry, Rhian and Sean. Sean for his amazing exposition on the culling sharks off the West Australian coastline. Rhian for her incredulous skills of taking on her jobs as a Student Representative. Henry achieved his award for his excellent manners in and around the school and its community.
Congratulations to all these award winners. Keep up the good work!

STUDENT REPS

In the early weeks of February 2014, all of the year 6s & 7s gathered in the BER room to deliver their Student Rep speeches.  The students spoke with outstanding finery, speaking of responsibility, trustworthiness, exquisite, spotless playgrounds, harmony, peace & equality for everyone in the playground and, most importantly, spreading their serene kindness, safety, politeness & willingness to help to all four corners of the school.

Like every school, we need Student Reps. Every term a new bunch of year 6 and 7s are chosen for this role. Student Reps do the jobs like running the sports shed, setting up the village green, mounting the flags, making sure classes are in line and setting up morning fitness. The Student Reps from our class are Rhian, Bella, Nikole, Adam, Henry and Peng. Well done to all of the Student Reps for Term 1, 2014.

BE INSPIRED

This term Mr Petch has assigned us an exciting project about the people in history who have contributed to society in some way.
Inspiration; the Oxford dictionary defines it as ‘The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.” By learning about these eminent souls we are being inspired in many ways.
The project consists of three sections. This required us to choose a person we find inspirational.
Section 1-The first section entitles us to create a booklet about our notable person. Containing basic facts, why we chose our person, their legacy and why it is important they are remembered. We also had to include a bibliography. This part was due on the 21st of February, 2014 and many exceeded expectations and proceeded well.
Section 2-The second part consists of presenting our findings to the class-and Ms Roberts- with the assistance of a power-point or prezi. This will take place on the 5th, 6th and 7th of March, 2014. All the presentations will be recorded and may possibly appear on the blog. We are also required to watch ourselves and self-assess our presentation.
Section 3- Finally, for the last segment, Mr Petch gave us the opportunity to be creative and make or build anything. Many found this challenging as it was our choice, however some saw it as the perfect occasion to articulate their abilities through creativity and imagination. This final part is due on the 26th of March, 2014. We all can hardly wait to see what everyone has decided to put forward.
This project has excited all and has enabled us to feel inspired by such notable human beings. Also this term we are being inspired by the vast variety of quotes and famous statements made throughout history, some have even shaped the world we live in today. Below are some interesting and inspiring quotes we have gathered together as a class.

“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
- Oscar Wilde
“Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.”
-Roald Dahl
“The journey of a thousand miles begin with a single step.”
-Lao-tzu
“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says, “I’m possible”!”
-Audrey Hepburn
“Close your eyes and enjoy the rollercoaster which is life.”
-Zayn Malik
“Not all those who wander are lost.”
-John Ronald Ruell Tolkien
“A person, who never made a mistake, never tried anything new.”
-Albert Einstein

LABOUR DAY

As you may already know, Labour Day (also recognised as the Eighth Hour day in Tasmania, or May Day in the Northern Territory), is coming up on the 3rd of March 2014. Fortuitously for us it is on a Monday, and that would mean… an extended weekend! However Labour Day is not only about a day without education or assignments. Labour Day has much deeper significance. Going back into the mid 19th century, back in the days most employees had to work 11 to 12 hours for 6 days a week. Fortunately, after an immense number of protests from labourers across the country it was decided that the day would be more balanced: eight hours labour, eight hours recreation time and eight hours of sleep, along with a working period of 5 days. Notably, the dates may contrast depending on which state you live in. This became acknowledged as Labour Day!

 IT'S TEST TIME
We have kicked off the year with an incredibly busy term as Mr Petch, propels us forward. This is a special year - Naplan year! Mr Petch has set a mountain load of tests, to prepare us for Naplan. We have been challenged to the very limit by Mr Petch, however, we know that it is essential if we want to achieve our very best for Naplan. We have sat Maths, English, and Writing sample tests.

For our first non-calculator test, we found out that we were not reading the questions with care. However in our second calculator test, we excelled. We scored 84% class average, just below our target of 85%!! We also scored quite well in the English tests. Remember, if you want to get a 100% in the Maths tests, please go on Maths Online to practise.
